January 12 2017 UPDATE: Pearson International Airport
Good news! No weekend runway alternation (“noise sharing”) on our North-South runways!
Since our last Update, there has been an important development. The Community Environment and Noise Advisory Committee (CENAC) public meeting was held on December 6, 2017 at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel. Representatives of the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA), Navigation Canada (NavCan) and Transport Canada attended. At the CENAC meeting, the GTAA presented an update on their 2017-2037 Toronto-Pearson Draft Master Plan. The GTAA also presented their 2018-2022 Noise Management Plan. Lastly, NavCan presented a brief summary of the HELIOS Report that they commissioned in 2016, as well as NavCan’s formal Response to the HELIOS Report. We told you about the NavCan Response in our November Marklander. The following is a brief summary of the CENAC meeting. You can find the slides, speaking notes and video on the CENAC website.
The GTAA prefaced their remarks with a general statement that their planning is consistent with the east-west configuration of the airport.
Draft Master Plan (2017-2037): This Draft Plan is based on the need for Pearson to handle the significant growth anticipated in air travel over the next 20 years. Among several points, the GTAA advised that previous planning was based on the current size of aircraft but that new aircraft design will result in more passengers per flight and so fewer flights than originally anticipated to meet growth demands. The GTAA also discussed the proposed regional transit hub. The Draft Master Plan was submitted to the Minister of Transport on December 1, 2017. The Minister’s approval of the land-use portion is required.
