President's Update

Georgina Balascas

Summertime and the living is easy...

I am so looking forward to those lazy, hazy days of summer! I just love summer! I hope you do too! It is a time to relax and enjoy family and friends by the pool, at the cottage, or barbecuing in the backyard. Perhaps travel is on your agenda this summer. Whatever your plans are, I hope you enjoy this wonderful season.

The MWHA has had a very busy schedule this year and especially this past month. In May we held several events: the All-Candidates Meeting for the provincial election, our Annual Garage Sale, a Community Safety evening, and the meeting of the Etobicoke York Community Council for the rezoning application for 240 Markland Drive. For all those members of the community who came out to these events, our sincerest thanks. I would especially like to thank those residents who came to support the MWHA at the Etobicoke York Community Council meeting on June 6th. What a tremendous turnout!

January 12 2017 UPDATE: Pearson International Airport

Good news! No weekend runway alternation (“noise sharing”) on our North-South runways!

Since our last Update, there has been an important development. The Community Environment and Noise Advisory Committee (CENAC) public meeting was held on December 6, 2017 at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel. Representatives of the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA), Navigation Canada (NavCan) and Transport Canada attended. At the CENAC meeting, the GTAA presented an update on their 2017-2037 Toronto-Pearson Draft Master Plan. The GTAA also presented their 2018-2022 Noise Management Plan. Lastly, NavCan presented a brief summary of the HELIOS Report that they commissioned in 2016, as well as NavCan’s formal Response to the HELIOS Report. We told you about the NavCan Response in our November Marklander. The following is a brief summary of the CENAC meeting. You can find the slides, speaking notes and video on the CENAC website.

The GTAA prefaced their remarks with a general statement that their planning is consistent with the east-west configuration of the airport.

Draft Master Plan (2017-2037): This Draft Plan is based on the need for Pearson to handle the significant growth anticipated in air travel over the next 20 years. Among several points, the GTAA advised that previous planning was based on the current size of aircraft but that new aircraft design will result in more passengers per flight and so fewer flights than originally anticipated to meet growth demands. The GTAA also discussed the proposed regional transit hub. The Draft Master Plan was submitted to the Minister of Transport on December 1, 2017. The Minister’s approval of the land-use portion is required.

Christmas Caravan 2017

MWHA Christmas Caravan 50th Anniversary!

To be able to celebrate any 50th Anniversary is very special and on December 10th, we celebrated that occasion for our annual Christmas Caravan! Who would have thought that a small community such as Markland Wood could continue its tradition of collecting food and clothing for local charities for all these years? Over the decades, we have seen many changes with many new volunteers. We have said goodbye to those that have moved away (even though some come back just for Caravan) and others that have passed away. As we met at the plaza, we took a moment to reflect.
